On Nov. 18, 2012, Grover Leon Sheffield went home to be with the Lord. He departed peacefully in his sleep at his apartment at Merrill Gardens with his wife of 67 years, Nell, and his family by his side.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1923, to Percy and Eula Sheffield. He was one of four children. He began work as a Western Union singing telegram messenger at a young age. He joined the military during World War II, where he served in the Air Force stateside as an airplane mechanic in Great Bend, Kan. After his military service, Grover had two careers that helped shape his professional life. He began as a traveling salesman for Bomar Feed and Seed where he developed skills and relationships that prepared him for his future as a businessman. In 1956, he bought a partnership interest in Turner & Schoel, Inc., where he would remain as a principal in the company until his retirement in 1986.
More important to him than his business career was his personal relationship with Jesus Christ, whom he came to love and serve as an adult when he accepted Him as his Lord and Savior in his mid-forties. He was a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and a tireless worker and supporter of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, where he and his family worshipped.
Next to his Lord, he loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Eula Sheffield, and his sisters, Myrtle Mims (Bill) and Mildred Englebert (Clarence).
Survivors include his wife, Nell Howell Sheffield of Alabama; his daughter, Ann S. Hall (Phillip) of Alabama; his son, Grover Howell Sheffield of Georgia; his sister, Linda Davis (Johnny) of Alabama; and his grandchildren, Amanda H. Alexander (Bradley), Jarett P. Hall, Jeremy Sheffield, Jessica Sheffield, and Jenna Sheffield, all of Alabama.
Pallbearers will be Jarett Hall, Jeremy Sheffield, Bradley Alexander, Del Howell, Daryl Mims, Marlon Boshell, Andrew Boshell, and Waylon Mims.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Chapel Hill Baptist Church Building Fund.
