It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Mary Florinda Powell. Mary passed away on May 18, 2024 at the age of 84 at the Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, BC. after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Brian, her parents Alba and Florindo and her sisters Mary and Enas. Mary is survived by her son Mark, her daughter Leslie (Myles) and proud Nonna to Tyler and Martine.
Mary was born at St. Pauls Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. September 5th, 1939. She lived in Anyox, B.C. with her family until the age of 3 when a huge fire destroyed the town. They then moved to Vancouver where the family settled. She met the love of her life Brian in 1963 through a blind date set up by a family friend. They got married in 1964 and raised two beautiful children in Richmond, B.C. where she was able to be a stay at home mom. The family then made a move to Calgary in 1985 for Brian’s job with Canadian Airlines. They lived there for 5 years and had the kind of home where friends were always welcomed and the fridge was always stocked. Brian unexpectedly passed away in 1988 and two years later in 1990 Mary moved back to North Vancouver B.C. to be closer to her family. She worked with the Vancouver School Board at University Hill Elementary as an Administrative Assistant until her retirement in 2007.
Her greatest pleasures in life to name a few were enjoying time with family and friends, daily walks at the West Vancouver seawall, volunteering at her church St. Anthony’s Parish, travelling, going to theatre and musical performances (she loved a good reason to get dressed up) and dancing (a huge passion of hers).
Mary was loving, compassionate, kind, protective, strong, caring and mindful. She is going to be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank the care team at Lynn Valley Care Centre where Mary resided for 2 years due to dementia. The care team was amazing and mom would often mention how kind everyone was and how much she loved living there.
