Ken was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 22, 1936. His family lived there for a while before moving to Vancouver when he was four years old. They lived in the West End, very close to Stanley Park, where he played much of the time and always regarded as his backyard. He attended Lord Roberts and Sir William Dawson Elementary Schools and always had good memories of both, then on to King George Secondary School where he became very active in Track & Field and baseball. He also initiated a popular afternoon Students "Current Affairs" program twice weekly and was very involved in school activities. After graduating Secondary School, Ken enrolled at UBC in Pre-Law, which he planned to continue in, but after a chance meeting with a former teacher and after a lengthy afternoon discussion he decided to continue on at UBC in the Teacher Training Program, a decision he never regretted. It was during this time that Ken made the most important decision of his life, to marry his sweetheart, Diane!
Ken had a long career, over 40 years as Teacher and Principal on Vancouver Island, the Interior of BC and on the Coast. When he returned to the lower mainland the majority of his work was at PVI and BCIT as an instructor, shop steward and union rep which he also found fulfilling as this gave him the opportunity to support and assist his colleagues.
Ken excelled in several sports, Track & Field, Meralomas Football and in particular Rugby, which he played with UBC Thunderbirds. Along with his wife and friends he enjoyed curling for several years at North Van recreation center. He was passionate about the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, mountain climbing, sailing, skiing, refereeing soccer matches and coaching soccer locally, including his own boys which brought him great pleasure and enjoyment.
Ken passed away suddenly on May 13 at George Derby Care Centre where he had been a resident since October 2015. We gratefully thank all the wonderful care givers for their devotion, true concern and affection for all the residents under their care.
Ken is survived by his beloved wife Diane, of 63 1/2 wonderful years, his brother Brian Johnston (daughter Georgina), son Brad (Spencer, Jason, Elyse), son Todd (Justin), son Ken (Chelsea, Cameron). He was predeceased by his beloved youngest son Sean November 7, 1993 and brother Randy Johnston November 4, 2008. Ken's family meant everything to him, he was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father (Dad), grandfather and friend to so many. Ken will be forever missed by all who met him and knew him.
We all love you so very much, you are in our hearts forever dearest Dad!!
