John Wong passed away on March 25, 2024, after a courageous and short battle with cancer. Surrounded lovingly by his family at home in North Vancouver, he rests peacefully leaving behind cherished memories and a profound legacy.
John Wong was born on November 12, 1938, in Peking, China. His father Wing Yeun, born in Vancouver, studied medicine at Queens University then travelled to work as a physician at the Peking Union Medical College. He met Ling Hsi (Vivian), a nurse from Wuhan, who studied midwifery in England. They returned to Canada after World War II and settled in Vancouver. John is predeceased by his sister Jeanette and daughter-in-law Jillian.
John was a husband and devoted partner to Janice (nee Scodellaro). The two of them were always together – skiing, travelling, shopping. They built a beautiful life in North Vancouver, centred around their children, David and Heather. John’s commitment to his role as a father was unmatched, and his affection and guidance will forever influence their lives. When something required fixing, David (Eirikka), Heather (Dale) and the grandchildren knew “Papa could fix it.”
John’s family knew he would travel great distances for exquisite Chinese food as he loved family dinners with his parents, children, grandchildren and close friends. Many special occasions were celebrated over a meal.
John’s grandchildren, Rebecca, Addison, Stephanie and Michael will deeply feel his absence. He made countless memories with them, whether commemorating significant milestones at Disneyland or attending dance recitals, gymnastic competitions, hockey games or theatre productions. His love and care for them was evident in every moment spent together. His presence in their lives brought joy and warmth, and he will be dearly missed by each of them.
John was a treasured friend to many including numerous relatives across the US and Canada. He enjoyed teeing off with friends in the Vancouver Chinese Golf Club and friends at the Desert Princess in Palm Springs.
John graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and began an entry level position with Woodward’s Company. He progressed steadily into management positions and spoke fondly of the company and remained active as an alumnus.
A service has not been planned at this time. Family and friends whose lives were touched by John are welcome to send notes and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BC SPCA
