Jean Edel of North Vancouver died peacefully at Inglewood Care Centre on February 26th at 89 years of age.
A native of Ilford, Essex, Jean spent her formative years during the war with her mother Grace in Bude, Cornwall and she often spoke fondly of the time she spent there. After completing her studies in Torquay to become an R.N., Jean travelled extensively before eventually moving to Vancouver to join her brother Norman.
It was in Vancouver that Jean met the love of her life, Hans, whom she married in 1961 and together they welcomed two children: Michael and Robert. After the births of their children, Jean left nursing for a time to raise their family. During this time she became an avid bowler, participating for many years in a league at Brunswick lanes in her spare time in addition to being a talented seamstress and knitter. Jean eventually returned to nursing — working at Louis Briar and Evergreen Lodge until her retirement.
In her retirement, Jean volunteered at keep-fit at Evergreen while living an active retired life between travels with Hans, taking night classes to study a variety of languages, line dancing, guitar lessons, and playing bridge.
Jean will be lovingly remembered by her family as a devoted wife of almost 62 years to Hans and with never a harsh word spoken between them, as a loving mother to Mike (Kim) and Rob (Karen) and as a grandmother who ensured there was always plenty of Snapple and Pringles on hand when playing monopoly, rat race and airline with her grandsons, Jamie and Daniel.
In keeping with Jean’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC. https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en/take-action/donate/donate-memory-honour
