I have known Mrs. B since 1986 when I first came to Canada from Germany. I was 20 years old. She was a relative from a friend of mine in Germany. She was my "Canada Oma" treated me like family. I miss our visits and phone call. She was so bright and full of energy and always knew what was going on in the world. I miss you very much Mrs. B.

Lillian, you had such great times with our mom, and saw her so often, you could practice your German, I can truly understand and sympathize your loss.

Eleonore was a strong, remarkable and amazing woman! living in her own home until she was 98, working hard in her garden ! this is what kept her so fit and strong !  she was intelligent with a good sense of humour !  to know her  was to love her ! I have lost a very special friend and my second "Mom" and I will miss companionship and her friendship her every day! My heart is aching her loss.

Michael, that is such a great memory, I remember that day well, Mom was so thrilled that you brought Adrian to meet her.

To a wonderful gramma, always made sure everyone was well fed and comfortable, we will miss Oma dearly. I can hope we will be as healthy in our "golden years" as she was in hers.

One important message I would like to share with you, if you still have your parents, visit them often, spend time with them, enjoy the time you still have, even if you think you are prepared, there is NEVER a good time to lose a parent. It hit me harder than I thought it would.

I admired your mother very much. We had good times together. She was such a happy person a great neighbour ion our street in Dunbar.

This is certainly a rich and meaningful life worth celebrating. In her 99 years, Eleonore has been part of such incredible historical events from wars to women's rights,First man on the moon, and the digital phenomenon,just to name a few. What an amaazing journey!! I was so grateful to have shared a special luncheon with Eleonore, family and friends. You will be missed.

We lived just up the street from you on 26th in Dunbar. As kids, we loved the joy that came from you and we admired your backyard garden we could see over the fence from the lane. How amazing you were for living in your cute little house, very independently, well into your 90's. We miss the thought of you, always being there. Love

In 1964 I came to live with John and Gerti on 12th Avenue and that is where I got to know "Oma" and "Opa". For me, she has always been Oma, although it took a while for her to accept it. I was accepted into the extended Baranowski family as an almost-family-member and have felt that way ever since. Even when I had my own family, she became Oma" to all of us. We will greatly miss her.

Our Mom Eleonore loved the number 7, she was the 7th child, born on the 7th day in 1914. She had an interesting childhood. Being the youngest child, it must not have been easy for her, having to listen to her older sisters advice. Her only brother was spoiled by her mother and the girls. Mom tells fond stories of her horse and buggy  rides in Breslau, Celesia, Germany, a place they all loved dearly. She married at the age of 21 and had a son John, in 1936. Life was not easy for the family during the war. After the war when the borders were changed, they were forced to leave their beloved home, with just the clothing on their backs. Families from other parts of the country were forced to take displaced families into their homes, it was a very difficult time for ALL.
Earlier mom was told that she could not have any more children, she defied the odds, and gave birth to her daughter, Monika, in 1947, at a time when they had absolutely Nothing!
With the kindness of family and friends they managed to survive.
Her husband wanted a better life for his children, so in 1957 they emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, to join uncle Fred who had been here since 1952. Her son John and his wife and baby Oliver followed a few months later. 
Life was difficult at first, we all had to learn the language, and soon realized how kind and helpful the Canadian people were. They listened carefully, without making us feel uneasy, even offering helpful advice. We were so grateful for that. A network of immigrant friends helped our parents to share stories of their daily struggles and together they celebrated their achievements.
Mom was an incredible hostess, excellent homemaker, she loved to cook and entertain. Her friends were ALWAYS welcome. Christmas and Thanksgiving and Easter dinners were amazing.
We have such great memories of all the festive occasions at our parents house. One could always drop in at any time for a visit, and she would happily serve you a meal, afternoon coffee and cake was a tradition she loved.
Her neighbors always complimented her beautiful garden, and admired her sundeck covered with spectacular planter boxes. She took great pride in her home, everything was always very clean and tidy.
Our dad passed away in December 1983 and she continued to live alone in her
home for 29 more years, until the age of 98. She had a great support team that would help her with any problems around the house and yard. She always believed that all the work around the house and garden kept her fit.
After dad passed away, every Sunday, her son and daughter-in-law would take Mom to the Mall for a weekly outing, knowing how much she loved to shop. She would often buy a new blouse for the next special occasion.
My husband Gary and I took her on several vacations to Hawaii, she saw all of the Hawaiian islands, she loved the climate and tropical flowers. January was a great time to get away from Vancouver, leaving the winter behind.
It was an exciting Century she lived in, the World changed drastically since 1914 there were so many new inventions, from the first telephone to all of the electrical appliances, computers, cell phones, to name a few.
I told her that I called my cousin Mike, in Germany, on skype, and that I could see him on the computer screen, and that he could see me, we could wave to each other, she could hardly comprehend that, but she tought it was amazing.
On November 19, 2012 Mom moved into a beautiful apartment at Sunrise Senior Living on Lynn Valley Road, a short distance from my brothers house. We were so happy to find such a great place for her. She just loved the large balcony next to her suite, and the fabulous mountain view. Sometimes she would ask, how long do I have to stay in this hotel ? 
On  July 7, 2014 she would have been 100, she always wanted to receive a letter from the Queen ! We often joked with her, that we hope the Queen stays healthy till Mom is 100. Sadly that is not meant to be.
Mom, we love you !
