Edward Stephen Trevor-Smith

It is with great sadness we announce that on Monday, December 19, 2022, our father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Edward (Ted) Trevor-Smith, M.D passed away at the age of 85 in Vancouver, B.C.

Born in Shanghai, his early life was marked by internment during the Second World War and the deaths of both parents. He immigrated to Canada in 1950 to live with his Aunt Dot and Uncle Alex Damsgaard. Ted was a proud Canadian and loved the country that took him in.

Ted graduated from the UBC School of Medicine in 1961 and practiced family medicine for 48 years. He began his practice in Vancouver at St. Paul’s Hospital and Vancouver General. In 1973 he and his family moved to Langley and a year later he moved his medical practice to Surrey. During his medical career in Surrey he became the Chief of Staff at the Surrey Memorial Hospital. Over the years he delivered 100’s of babies and cared for multiple generations of families. He cared deeply for his patients.

A great lover of sports, Ted played soccer for UBC during his time at school. He was an avid tennis and squash player. Many friendships were formed on the court. Ted served as the President of the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club in 1970-72. During his time living in Langley, he established the East Langley Open Tennis Tournament and won its infamous “trophy” multiple times.

Ted loved animals, and in his later years, when not feeding his ducks, he was watching them from the den while enjoying football, soccer, hockey, golf, and tennis.

Ted is survived by his wife Carol Bolton, daughters Tannis (Neal Bottomley) and Haizley, son Robert, grandchildren Graysann, Sydney (Ben McKay), and Trevor, and great-grandson, Evan, and first wife, Shannon. He was predeceased by his sister Nina Ulrich.

A memorial service will be held at a future date and will be announced on the memorial website.
