Ed Anderson, born in Calgary Alberta, a long time resident of North Vancouver B.C., passed away peacefully in North Vancouver on Monday December 12th, 2022.
Born to turbulent times, fostered in farm life, loved and reared by his dear mother Sadie Bernice Anderson (February 1904 - June 1974). He fought the riggers and battles of poverty and meanness; surviving to achieve independence, a meaningful livelihood and traveled the world from east to west including the beaches of Normandy.
He is survived by the love of his life, Susan Allison Anderson, son Raine G.E. Anderson, daughter in law Janine, grandchildren Kai and Scarlett. He also left sons from his 1st marriage Howard, Earl, and daughter Melinda, their children as well as sisters Alice Remfert and Pat Bradley.
Ed grew up mostly in the village of Bowness, Alberta, west of Calgary. He attended Bowness Elementary and Junior High Schools, Western Canada High School, Calgary, AB, and Graduated Grade 12 Raymond High School, Raymond, AB (1957). He was a Member of the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserves Station, Calgary, AB - 1955 and 1963. He achieved the Banking School Seminar, Certificate of Accreditation - Trust Companies Association, Queens University (Trust Business, Accounting and Law) - 1965.
In his youth, he had various jobs from farm and ranch worker, bowling lanes pinsetter, highway construction worker, auto-body shop grunt and movie theater usher. From there he became a Banker, Estate/ Trust officer, Senior Trust Officer, and Trust Company Office Branch Manager for Montreal Trust. After banking life, he found his main profession and passion as a Paralegal/ Administrator of Estates (30+ years) at the law firm of Clark Wilson, under the tutorship of Owen C. Dolan, Q.C.. Nicknaming it ‘The Firm’, his knowledge, understanding and kindness not only gave him the respect and friendship of his peers but anyone who had the opportunity to meet him. With his booming voice, big smile and firm handshake he could warm even the coldest hearts. His word was his bond and people loved him for it.
Ed also became an accredited Freelance Aviation Photographer, reporter and writer for over 20 years. His passion for chasing and photographing airplanes over that time was unrivaled. During those 20 plus years, he made many friendships and became part of various treasured associations and publications that he held dear. These included Canadian Museum of Flight volunteer, Air Force Officers Association of Greater Vancouver (Associate Member), Checkered Flag Club (Reno, NV), National Air Racing Group Member and Photographer, Society of Air Race Photographers, Canadian Association of Journalists, World Airshow News Magazine, Air Highways Magazine of Open Skies, Aviation News Journal, and Pacific Flyer News.
In Ed’s words, “The 20 or so years in my avocation of chasing airplanes, mostly Warbirds, antiques and Air Racers, were my most dedicated and exciting past times. Other than the wonderful company of my Susie and her special homemade casserole, I’ll miss the taste of a good cup of coffee, the smooth drink of Rye Whiskey and Ginger Ale over ice and the sweet slice of Cherry Pie with a dab of ice cream on top. It was a great ride.”
You will be missed but never forgotten.
