She was predeceased by a number of beloved family members: parents, Stanley and Beatrice Girling; first husband of 18 years, Eden Muir; second husband of 43 years, Arthur Poole; son Randy Muir; sister Jean Todd; granddaughter Cheryl Pelland and son in-law, Mike Baker. Doreen will be forever loved and missed by her children: Don (Joyce) Poole, Colin (Valerie) Muir, Irene (Douglas) Frew, Eric (Carol) Muir, Don (Wendy) Muir, Ian (Cathy) Poole, Karen (Mike) Baker and Ian (Lori) Muir. She leaves behind a legacy of 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Doreen was born August 10, 1926 in Vancouver to the late Stanley and Beatrice Girling. Growing up in West Point Grey, Doreen enjoyed the outdoors – hiking and skiing, with Hollyburn Mountain being a favourite. As a young adult she kept busy as a typist, but her long-term career, on top of raising their children, was running their Bed & Breakfast; in 1981 preparing for Expo 86, Doreen and Arthur began welcoming guests from near and far, with her last guest checking out just two days before she died. Doreen and Arthur made time to hike, cross-country ski, and travel to the UK, Europe, Turkey, Israel, and beyond. In BC, they took joy in the island life at their Cottage on Saturna Island, alongside the many friends and family who came to stay. Throughout the years, whether at the Cottage or at home, energetic Doreen could often be found tending to her gardens, which was a favourite pastime.
Doreen will be fondly remembered by her neighbours, friends from church, the many people she helped over the years by providing a home to stay in, her hundreds of Bed & Breakfast clients, her numerous repeat marine students and instructors, and those she helped lead to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on September 14th at St Catherine’s Anglican Church (1058 Ridgewood Drive, North Vancouver).
