I was saddened to hear of Pete’s passing.  It’s hard at any time but especially at Christmas which was Pete’s favourite time of year.  It was his ritual every Christmas season to watch ‘A Christmas Carol’.  He always went all out in spoiling others with gifts.   One year he sent us a package that was easily 24 boxes each individually wrapped one inside the other.  It took us hours to open!  Pete was a ‘gentle’ man who was proud of his Dutch heritage and who cared about nature.  On hunting trips with the guys he was the lone person who would be shooting the animals with his camera.  On another occasion there was a sapling growing in my garden.  One day the sapling and the nut it was growing out of were gone.  I was a bit upset but Pete pointed out that the nut had probably been buried there in the first place by a squirrel, and he was now merely reclaiming what was rightfully his.  Pete liked working outdoors and loved to walk the Seawall.  He liked nothing better than topping it off afterwards with a ‘Grand Slam’ breakfast at Denny’s. Pete was a bit mercurial and quick to anger, but quicker to forgive and forget and move on.  He had a sense of humour and was known among friends for his ‘Peteisms” which were things he would say that would catch you completely off guard and make you think.  Pete was a private person, and a loyal friend to many.  He had a good heart and lived a simple, uncomplicated life.  He loved, and was loved.  He will remain in my heart forever.
