Unexpectedly but very peacefully, Dave passed away in Eagle Ridge Hospital surrounded by the love of his family whom he leaves behind to miss him so much, wife and partner –in-everything Claire, daughters Laura (Angelo) and Linda (Gary), grandchildren Melissa (Chad) and Steven (Jessica), sister and brother-in-law Gwen and Dan, relatives in Scotland and countless friends who loved him here and abroad. Dave was born in Edmonton to Scottish immigrant parents and grew up in Vancouver, attending Hudson and Beaconsfield elementary schools, and being a member of the first graduating class (1954) from Gladstone high school, among a group which still meets to this day. While working at a wide variety of summer jobs, he obtained his Bachelors and Masters Degrees at UBC and taught Math for a number of years before working as Vice- Principal at several Vancouver secondary schools, retiring in 1994 from David Thompson. He thoroughly enjoyed his career in public education working with both students and teachers and making many close friends along the way. Yearly volleyball parties involved colleagues from several schools. Dave enjoyed many things: all sports, played some and watched them all on TV, walks with his dogs, camping trips, countless travels with family and friends, going to plays, especially musicals, here and in London, visiting friends in Britain and Australia and hosting them here, organizing his Christmas lighting displays, planning all sorts of special activities for his family, playing poker with a group that has been meeting for more than 50 years, and just enjoying the changing seasons, sunsets, and all the natural beauty of his beloved Port Moody. He loved music, loved to dance and had a great sense of humor and a contagious smile. His special love was people and being in their company and he made an impression on them wherever he went- an outgoing and friendly man, Dave made a point to get to know everyone by name. We are thankful for the excellent, sympathetic care that Dave and the family received from Doctors Ervine and Baum and Doctor Beheshti and Nurses Penny and Elena at the hospital during his brief stay. If desired, donations would be appreciated in memory of Dave Cummings to the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice. To share memories of Dave’s upbeat attitude, his fun-loving and friendly spirit, and the joy he brought to all of us, please come casually and colourfully dressed to the Italian Cultural Centre, 3075 Slocan Street, Vancouver on Monday, October 21 from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. Lots of parking at the centre, Renfrew skytrain station 2 blocks east.
