Wilson C. Hicks passed away on April 1, 2010. He was born on December 29, 1931 in Mathiston, Mississippi to Lovelle and George Hicks. He was raised in his beloved, Alabama. After graduating from Pennington High School in Blountsville, Alabama, he served in the U.S. air force during the Korean Conflict. The GI bill and a football scholarship gave him the opportunity to graduate from Jacksonville Teacher’s College, Anniston, Alabama, in 1956. He was a member of the JSU undefeated team of 1955, and will be missed by his fellow team members who still get together on a yearly basis. From 56 through 59 He coached football, basketball, and baseball at Susan Moore High School in Blountsville, AL. In 1959 he moved to Florida to accept a teaching and coaching position at Jupiter High School. Coach Hicks, “Uncle Dub” retired in 1991 after 37 years of service at Jupiter High. In the words of one of his favorite players, he was gentle, kind, tough and rugged. He was one of the winingest coaches in the history of the school, and the longest standing Athletic Director. For 28 years, as coordinator of the Diversified Cooperative Training Program, he helped many students transition from school to the workforce. . It was always a source of pride for him that many students and players never forgot their kind teacher, and coach. He was preceded in death by his two brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Fatima; his daughter, Peggy Larson; his grandchildren, Cody, Haley, and Tara; his sisters-in-law, Ninfa Eiskowitz, and Alicia Blonde. In addition he will be missed by many faithful long-time friends, his cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, April 5, 2010 from 6-8PM and from 11-1PM on Tuesday, April 6, 2010.A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on April 6, 2010 at 1 p.m., followed by a military ceremony and internment at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, 5601 Greenwood Ave. in West Palm Beach. Donations may be made in his name to the Parkinson’s Foundation, or Hospice of Palm Beach County.
