Robert Franklin Boyd, 88, passed away on October 16, 2024, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Born on February 13, 1936 in Hampton Virginia, Robert flourished through his early education at Simonsdale Elementary and Churchland High School. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech (VPI) in 1959.
In the same year, Robert began his career at Pratt & Whitney in Palm Beach County, where he dedicated 37 years to designing and testing propulsion systems for Air Force jets. In 1966, he relocated his young family, embarking on a cross-country drive from Florida to California for a top-secret six-month assignment at Lockheed's Skunk Works, where he contributed to the development of the SR-71 Blackbird. Robert meticulously designed by hand the engine nacelle to house the Pratt & Whitney J-58 engines, a task he approached with great passion.
Robert leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Patricia Lamoureux Boyd, two daughters, Donna and Amy, and two grandsons Will and Joe. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert F. Boyd Jr., and his cherished siblings Thomas, Margaret, Elva, and Billy.
A longtime resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Robert was actively involved in his community and was a co-founder of the Old Eagles, a retirement network for former Pratt & Whitney/United Technologies employees. Following his retirement, he devoted considerable time to researching his family genealogy, indulging his love of history. He and Pat were founding members of Saint Ignatius Parish, proudly engraving their names on a stone added to the foundation of the original building in the early 1970s.
A funeral mass for Robert will be held on November 4, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius of Loyola in Palm Beach Gardens. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at Howard-Quattlebaum Funeral Center, 754 US-1, North Palm Beach, starting at 11:30 a.m.
