3407. Ray A Schmidt, 83, of Palm Beach Gardens, formerly of Oakdale, NY passed away peacefully under the care of Hospice at his home on October 25, 2011 surrounded by loving family. Ray’s life began in Tipton, Mo where he met Ruth, the love of his life. He enlisted in the Navy and attended officer’s candidate school in Pensacola, FL where he earned his wings and became a naval fighter pilot. After 11 years of active naval service, he completed 9 years in the naval reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. During his reserve years he embarked on an awesome 32 year career as an airline pilot for Trans World Airlines based out of JFK. Ray was a graduate of Hofstra University.
After retirement he and Ruth relocated to North Palm Beach – Palm Beach Gardens where they enjoyed many years of boating, deep sea fishing and cruising around the world making life long friends.
We will remember Ray for his generous heart, endless sense of humor and the inspiration he shared with so many. These wonderful memories will remain in our hearts forever.
Ray is survived by his loving wife Ruth of 61 years and his devoted children, Carol Hovland of Orlando, FL, Diane Lavin of Gig Harbor, WA, Greg Schmidt of North Palm Beach, FL and Donna Marsik of Loganville, GA, his 6 grandchildren Katie Lavin and Jaclyn Landry both of Seattle WA, Derek Marsik of Jacksonville, FL, Dustin Marsik of Loganville, GA, Maddy and Olivia Schmidt of North Palm Beach, his great grandson Bradley Marsik of Jacksonville, FL, and his sisters Jean Lutz and Marilyn Marcum of Tipton, MO.
The family will host a celebration of his life in the near future in lieu of a memorial service. Ray will be honored by the United States Naval burial at sea program.
