Carol was born Madeline Haus to Ross Haus and Maud Maxwell on August 10, 1920 in Howes Mill, MO. After her childhood and education in rural MO, she moved to St. Louis, MO to work in administrative support positions. In St. Louis she met her future husband, Herbert Story, and they wed in 1943.
They were stationed at Randolph Field in San Antonio, Texas during WWII, and returned to St. Louis afterwards to work and raise their family. They were both active in local organizations and politics, including The American Legion and the local school district.
Carol went back to work after her two daughters were in school at various St. Louis companies. She retired from Ralston Purina in 1982. Carol enjoyed her family, gardening, cooking, playing cards, and was an accomplished seamstress. She had a joy of life and sense of spirituality until the end.
Carol was predeceased by her parents, brothers Millard & Peck, sister Dorothy, and husband of 64 years, Herbert, who passed in 2007. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Alan), and Jenny (Dave) and two granddaughters, Carrie (Eric) and Emma (Brian) – as well as family and friends in St. Louis, MO and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
The family expresses gratitude to the staff of Brookdale Senior Living, where she lived for 8+ years, and to Trustbridge Hospice for their compassionate care at the end.
A memorial service will be held for Carol at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 754 US Hwy 1 in NPB on Wednesday, September 7th from 10:00 a.m. - Noon.
