James (Jim) David Salvo, age 87 (10 days shy of his 88th birthday), longtime resident of both Fall River, MA and Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones in Palm Beach Gardens. Born in Fall River, MA, he was the devoted husband of Sheila DeNadal Salvo, the son of Anthony James and Mildred Leahey Salvo, and father to three daughters, Vicki Salvo Bruce of Fall River, MA, Lauri Salvo Andretta (Michael Vetere) of Glenford, NY, Cathi Salvo Harris (Peter Harris) of Boonton Twp, NJ and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and his brother, Thomas Salvo (Elizabeth Salvo) of Warwick, RI. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Katie Bruce (Matt Watson), Jim Andretta, Pat Bruce (Jaclyn Kaye), Lindsay Andretta (Lukasz Widziszewski), Sarah Bruce (Alex Travers), Emma Harris (Alex Hagen), Maddi Harris (Rick Lewis), Chloe Harris, Gemma Bruce, Ian Bruce and many nieces and nephews.
Above all, Jim loved and valued his family and friends. He cherished the love of his life, Sheila, his devoted wife of 63 years, and was thoroughly convinced that his daughters were perfect. The lights of his life have been his grandchildren since the first one made her appearance over thirty-four years ago. He loved spending time with each of them, especially sharing his enthusiasm for travel and taking them on adventures, dancing, or sneaking out for donuts or ice cream. He was thrilled with the new addition of the Vetere grandchildren and great-grandchildren to his clan. He was honored to serve as trusted advisor to his cherished nieces and nephews. His life was also enhanced by his many treasured longtime friends who he counted as family. He had the privilege of coaching Little League and believed in each of his players.
He attended Durfee High School (1953), then went on to join the US Army, serving two years in Korea. Education was so important to Jim that, while in Korea, he drove four hours to
Seoul in order to take his SATs, then worked two to three jobs at a time while attending Boston College (1959).
Publicly, Jim will predominantly be remembered for his entrepreneurship. He was the President of Salvo Machinery Co., which manufactured food processing equipment for companies throughout the world, including Salvo’s Potato Chips, and was a real estate developer in the Taunton area.
Jim was a serious golfer and longtime member of PGA National Golf Club who ran a league and will be remembered by his golf buddies as saying, “Do you want to play golf…or some other game?”
Plans for a memorial service that will be held during the summer in Massachusetts will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Tee Massachusetts, 300 Arnold Palmer Blvd, Norton, MA 02766.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.howard-quattlebaum.com for the Salvo family.
