Sylvia Lee Reed, age 101, of Miami Gardens, Florida passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024.
Sylvia Lee Wilson-Reed was born on October 12, 1922 in Clanton, Alabama. She started from very humble beginnings. Her parents, Alfonso Wilson and Marie Williams, later adopted by Archie Hall, were a part of a close-knit family in her small farm town.
She grew up with a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents known, collectively, as the Williams-Craig-Martin family. Over time, she became the matriarch of a family spread all over the country. This large family community was very rooted in The Church of God of God they all attended. Sylvia joined this church as a child and attended until she married James H. Reed in 1942 and moved to Florida.
When asked to describe who our mother was, "The Fruits of the Spirit" comes to mind. She has expressed, lived, and demonstrated all nine of the Fruits of the Spirit. They lived inside her. On a daily basis anyone who was in her presence enjoyed being with her. You may not be able to pinpoint why you felt comfort in her presence, but you knew it is there. She sought the highest good in others.
She became a member of Croom's Temple Church of God in Christ in 1968. When it was discovered that her only son, James H. Reed III, was dying, the church members embraced and comforted her during the family's time of need. She fellowshipped with her congregation, and ministered to the family, the peace of mind of letting God's will be done. She continued to serve the Mothers of the Church and became the Mother of the Church in 2014.
Patience and kindness are demonstrated in her slowness to speak. It is this quality of restraint that keeps her from acting hastily in the face of disagreement, opposition, or persecution. Her kindness is felt in her eagerness to put others at ease. With her family and friends her goodness and faithfulness were displayed in her selfless desire to be open hearted and generous to them; often above what others thought they may have deserved. She is dependable, loyal, and trustworthy.
She is preceded in death by her husband James H. Reed Jr and son James H. Reed III. In her home going she leaves behind, to honor her memory, 5 children, 1 adopted son, 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a multitude of family, friends and church members.
