Alvin Sherman, a developer and philanthropist, passed away January 26th, a month shy of his 96th birthday. His love for South Florida led his family there in the 1950’s. He started building with a single spec house and grew a company – Development Corporation of America, which ultimately became Florida’s largest and was listed on The American Stock Exchange. His reputation for helping friends, family and organizations also grew. Among many other philanthropic gifts, the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University, and the Sherman Family Stage at the University of Miami’s Jerry Herman Ring Theater, are testimonies to his generosity and commitment to his community. A decorated Air Force war hero, his WWII medals & memorabilia are on display at the Library that bears his name. He is survived by his daughter, Jayne Baron Sherman. His wife of more than 56 years, Gloria, and his son, Kenneth, predeceased him. The funeral will take place at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 17250 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, Florida 33160, at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, January 28, 2018. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Memorial Hospital Foundation in Hollywood, Florida, Nova Southeastern University, and the University of Miami.
