Gary spent 24+ years in the US Air Force. Stationed in Japan for 5 years, he went TDY to Vietnam so often be accumulated 3 tours in country. He learned Japanese, taught scientists and businessmen scientific English. He also became a rated GO player; with his partner he won the national Empress Cup in Dupliacte Bridge one year; taught bridge on a Travel with Gorman cruise ship; and, took still shots on the set of Tora Tora Tora for the movie company. After returning to the US, he completed the AF 7-Level course in electronics. Gary's top secret rating got him sent to England to help get the cruise missile base at Greenham Common set up. After retiring, he worked at McIntire's Coins & Collectibles shop in Jacksonville making use of his knowledge of ancient, medieval, and US coins ( he learned from his dad & granddad). In his personal time he played chess (rated an Expert); won the AR state chess championship several times; pursued his photography hobby; rock and mineral collecting; cooking; and, enjoyed listening to his classical music collection.
Gary is predeceased by his parents Betty Pugh and Gerald William Huber, and nephew Michael Huber. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Carol, his siblings: Steve and Enit Huber, Candi and Doug Dobmeyer, Teresa Huber Hill and Terry Lucas, William Huber; nieces & nephews: Rebecca Hill Penner, William Hill, Aaron Hill, Amelia Dobmeyer, Paul Dobmeyer, Raymond Huber; and, 9 great nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on March 8, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the funeral home, with military honors being rendered at 2:30pm by the US Air Force Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Gary's honor to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Vietnam Veterans of America with the donation links on this page.
