Laura H. Slater was born Dec 5, 1923 in New York to two Jewish immigrant parents : her mother Fannie Shapiro born in Poland and her father Harry Haliezer born in Austria. Laura had an older sister Shirley.
Laura attended a special High School for the Arts in Manhattan where she honed her natural artistic abilities, her specialty was drawing. Laura could draw anything, but was especially interested in fashion modeling. She created a beautiful portfolio and received a job at Women's Wear Daily as a Fashion Illustrator, where she earned $85 per week in the early 1940's which was quite a nice sum at the time.
She married Sherman Slater in 1949, and they settled in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. She stayed at her position at Women's Wear Daily until she had her first child, Andrew in 1953 . Laura was a doting mom and gave Andrew a sister Renee in 1957. Laura's athletic abilities were inherited by her children and as a family they all enjoyed paddle tennis, tennis , swimming, horseback riding, bicycling , bowling, and skating and sledding in Prospect Park.
Later in life Laura and her husband relocated permanently from Brooklyn to South Florida to be closer to both their children . They settled in Wynmoor Village in Coconut Creek where they enjoyed many happy years of active retirement. Laura especially enjoyed the shows at the Wynmoor Theatre and the Saturday night after show dancing at the clubhouse. She continued to play tennis until the age of 88.
Laura remained active with her friends at Wynmoor until Covid shut everything down in March 2020. In August 2021, Laura chose to move to Jacksonville to live with her daughter Renee and daughter-in-law Linda . In Dec 2021, Laura attended the wedding of her only grandchild Alyson Slater to Brian Mattison of Boca Raton, Fl. The Wedding venue was in Charleston, SC. She was one of the stars at the wedding after the bride.
Laura became ill at the end of February 2022 and passed from complications of heart disease on March 11, 2022. She is survived by her son Andrew, daughter Renee, granddaughter Alyson and her greatly anticipated great granddaughter due in Aug 2022, and daughter's in law Susan and Linda.
