Elaine was the daughter of the late Louis Steen and Belle Lehman. Elaine was born in the Bronx on October 20, 1930. Her father Louis was an Irish immigrant who was born in the Jewish ghetto in Dublin. Over a hundred years later, Elaine’s son Craig would go to Ireland to visit the home in Dublin where his grandfather was born.
Elaine graduated from Central Commercial High School in 1948 with a focus on bookkeeping and accounting skills. To attend classes, she took the train each day from the Bronx to Manhattan. She used the skills she learned in high school to help build several successful businesses with her husband Allen. Elaine met Allen while she was strolling down a New York City street with a friend. Allen was a passenger in a convertible driving by checking out the sites. They married on Feb 27, 1951. Elaine wore a rose-colored wedding dress with a navy overcoat. Ten years later, Elaine and Allen left the Bronx for Yonkers, where they raised their two sons Mitchell and Craig in the Crestwood neighborhood. In the late 1970s, the family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where Elaine and Allen were still living at the time of her death. During their 72 years of married life, Elaine and Allen owned numerous businesses, including auto parts stores in Manhattan and Harlem, a variety of commercial real estate ventures, several restaurants, and even an ice skating rink in Fort Lauderdale that was also the practice facility for the Florida Panthers at the time. Elaine managed the office and accounting for each of these businesses, while Allen focused on the operational and executive aspects.
Elaine was strong willed, fiercely loyal, loving, and generous to a fault. She instilled these qualities in her sons.
Elaine is preceded in death by her brother Melvyn Steen. She is survived by her husband, Allen Singer, sons Mitchell Singer and Dr Craig Singer, son-in-law George Garmer, and granddaughter Isabelle Singer.
Elaine was buried during a private service at the Star of David Memorial Gardens in North Lauderdale, Florida. She was interred on April 20, 2023, on a beautiful sunny South Florida day with a gentle breeze, under a pair of shade trees in the Garden of Netanya.
