Luz Estrella Velez Vega —affectionately known as “Mama” or “Grandma Lucy,” passed away peacefully surrounded by her children after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. She entered God’s Kingdom on March 10, 2023, at her home in Los Angeles Ca. Lucy was 75 years old. Those of us who were Blessed to be touched by her understand the imprint she left in our hearts. Lucy was talented, especially with her hands. She sewed, crocheted, painted, loved to dance, had a vibrant, infectious personality, and was an amazing cook. With a cafecito and cigarette in her hand, Lucy welcomed everyone into her home and they quickly became family. Her home was like Grand Central Station always filled with love, laughter, music, loud talking, and great Puerto Rican food. She believed in feeding everyone who came through her doors. Her motto was, “donde comen uno comen cien.” “Where one person eats, a hundred can.” Throughout her entire life, she held an unwavering faith in Jehovah God, and Jesus Christ which she shared with those who surrounded her. Not a day went by where Lucy didn't talk about how much her children, grandchildren, family and friends meant to her - Inculcating the love of Jehovah and Jesus to everyone she met was arguably her most important achievement in life. Lucy was funny especially with her Spanglish. In her attempt to translate Spanish to English, she’d create new words. She was kind, caring and a giving person who always put the needs of her family and the world before her own. She was a woman of strong faith who faced every challenge in her life with courage and dignity. She instilled in us the importance of family, hard work and doing what is right. Lucy was an inspiration to us all and will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched. Lucy is survived by her loving children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, children-in-law, countless friends and to the world as “mama” because she was “mama” to everyone. She loved Jehovah and believed in the paradise Jesus is preparing for us. You will always live in the memory of our hearts and we will never forget you. We love you so much. Sleep in peace. Until Jesus wakes you in paradise. 1 Peter 1:3
A celebration of life for Lucy are still being organized, which will be held in the Bronx NY.
