Virginia Dawson (Powell) Moore passed away at age 87 on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Life Care Center of Charleston following a long and brave battle with Alzheimer’s. She was surrounded by her children, Jim, Judy, Patty and Terrie. Virginia (fondly known to many as Nanny) was born in Todd County, Kentucky on May 10, 1929, the daughter of Sam and Eura Mae (Johnson) Powell. She grew up on a farm in Kentucky and in 1950 married Ted L. Moore and began her life as an Army wife. She traveled the U.S. and Germany making a loving home for her family in each destination. She settled in Charleston in 1968 where she put down roots and became a member of Northwood’s Baptist Church. She quickly made numerous friends and was involved in many activities including bridge club and garden club. Virginia won ribbons for her roses and African violets in the Coastal County fair and the “yard of the month” sign appeared in front of her house more than once. She loved gardening and her flowers. She loved entertaining family and friends in her home. During basketball season you could catch her in front of the TV watching her favorite team, the Boston Celtics, while eating a bowl of popcorn. Her greatest love, though, was love of family and friends. Nanny was happiest when holding a baby. She adored children, not just hers, everyone’s children! Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Phillip R. Moore, her five sisters and four brothers and by her ex-husband, Ted. Virginia is survived by her son James L. Moore (Judy) of Goose Creek; her daughters Patty Van Dyne and Terrie Howlett (David) of Charleston; and daughter-in-law Deborah Moore of Goose Creek. Nanny is survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Wahrmund (Mike), Stephanie Towers (Derrick), Chuck Van Dyne (Lindsey), Keagen Moore, Tyler Van Dyne (Christine), Lee Thomas Van Dyne, and Kristin Howlett Crowe (Ralph). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Andrew Wahrmund, Caroline Wahrmund, Carter Towers, William Van Dyne, Amanda Durant and Emily Howlett. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Carolina Memorial Park. The funeral will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank her very special caregiver, Angie Chapman for her years of loving care of their mother. A special thank you to all the nurses and CNA’s who loved and cared for her at Life Care Center.
