December 20, 1933 – December 11, 2024
Mary left this earth on the morning of December 11th and stepped into Heaven and into the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mary was born in Buckeye, Arizona.
Mary married her precious husband, Don Moore, and they were married just a few weeks before her 16th birthday. They were married for 56 years.
Don was enlisted in the United States Navy and would serve 20 years. While they were stationed in Morocco, Mary began working at the Navy Exchange. When they left Morocco to return to the US, she had advanced to the Manager of the Navy Exchange. After settling in Charleston, Mary would go on to become the Manager of the Navy Hospital Exchange and later, the Men-riv Navy Exchange. She had a very successful career managing these retail stores and was highly respected among her peers.
Mary loved to bowl when she was younger. She and Don also played cards a lot, mainly Pinochle. They made a great, competitive team, although many credited much of their success to Don and his ability to remember every card that was played! At the age of 47, Mary decided she would try running. She purchased her first pair of running shoes and before too long, she was bringing home age group trophies from most local races and some from out of town. At the age of 53, Mary set the SC state record for a 5K race, in her age group. She enjoyed jogging with both her sons, Mike and Rick.
On a “late life adventure”, when she was 73, she hiked to the top of Mt LeConte with her son, Rick, and spent the night in primitive lodging there before hiking down the next day. She hiked up this 5.5 mile trail, with an elevation change of 2800 feet, in 3 hours!
Mary had a wonderful sense of humor and along with her 3 kids, Donna, Mike and Rick, sufficiently harassed Don with jokes and pranks! She was a model wife and mother. She was always supportive of Don and the kids.
Mary was a member of Northwood Baptist Church for a very long time. Some of her best friends were from her Sunday School classes there that she dearly loved.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Don, her daughter, Donna, and her grandson, Don.
She is survived by: her son, Mike (Cathy) of Conway, SC, and her son Rick (Sheila) of Summerville, SC, her sister Louise of Knoxville, TN, her brother, George, of Jasper, Texas, and her grandchildren Jason, Julie, Melissa, Ray and James, and her great-grandchildren Loralai, Grady, Cara, Helen, Harper, Lilly, Alexander, Zoey, Bronte, Cameron and Rowan. She is also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins. She had a wonderful relationship with her granddaughter by marriage, Denise Jarko, and her “favorite niece”, Julie Moore.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday December 18, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406. A Celebration of life will follow from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Chapel. The Burial will follow at 12:00 pm at Carolina Memorial Gardens.
