Margaret was born on June 4, 1927, at home in Harlem GA to George and Nina (Waters) Rainwater. At an early age she eloped with a handsome serviceman on New Year’s Eve. She was married to him for 32 years until his death in 1975. They made their home in Charleston, SC and there she raised four rambunctious boys in a small two bedroom home. Margaret was dedicated to her family and her church. She enjoyed serving others, working in the cafeteria of St Francis Hospital and West Ashley Elementary, caring for children in the baby room at Ashley River Church, and working as a toddler Sunday school teacher and was a member of her church’s home visiting outreach team.
Margaret was preceded in death by her mother and father, Nina and George Rainwater, her husband, Sidney Robert Whitt Jr, her sons, Sidney Robert Whitt III, Danny Lee Whitt, and Gerald Wayne Whitt, her brothers, George David “Sonny” Rainwater and Jimmy Curtis Rainwater, and her sisters, Virginia R Baize and Katie R Brown. She is survived by her son, Steve Whitt (Melanie) of Talking Rock, GA, grandchildren Sidney Robert Whitt IV(Avis) of Buford, GA, Donna Whitt Ayers (Jason) of Flowery Branch, GA, Jeffrey Whitt of Charlotte, NC, Tyler Whitt of Beaufort, SC, Jessica Monteforte of Denver, CO, Brooke Fuerst (Carl) of Tripp, SD, Robin Henry (Doug) of Tea, SD, Margaret Harris (Jeremiah) of Grand Island, NE, Tracy Henglefelt (Craig) of Alexandria, SD, Trevor Whitt (Ruby) of Spokane Valley, WA, Shannon Whitt (Tim) of New York, NY, Dana Alvarez (Daniel) of Canton, GA, Jennifer Poole (Scott) of Ballground, GA, Stephanie Honea (Scott) of Canton, GA, Shawn Whitt (Connie) of Mt Pleasant, SC, Kim Goodwin (Harry Hobbs Jr) of Wilmington, NC, 25 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 13th, 2019 at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave, North Charleston, SC 29406, at 11 o’clock am. Margaret’s life will be celebrated during the 11 o’clock am Carolina Bay Church, 2927 Savannah Hwy, Charleston, SC 29414, on Sunday, April 14th, 2019. In lieu of flowers donations in Margaret’s name may be made to Carolina Bay Church.
