He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews to whom we are grateful for their love and support throughout his lifetime. He loved you all so much. Manning will be missed by all his family more than can be put into words.
His mother passed away when he was a year old and he was raised in downtown Charleston by his beloved Aunt Gussy then later by his sister, Elizabeth. He loved telling stories of his childhood at Folly Beach and the family store in downtown Charleston. The Aunt Gussy stories were endless.
Manning graduated from Bishop England High School and later enlisted in the United States Navy. He was then employed as a civil servant with the Department of Navy and retired as a GS13 in the late 1980’s. After the death of his wife, Jean, he went on to work for Dorchester District 2 schools at Fort Dorchester High School in the Attendance Office. That job brought him great joy as he loved the students and staff at FDHS and was involved in many of the after-school activities.
Manning was a long-time member of the Charleston chapter of the Fellowship Society and served one term as president. He took pride in his membership and enjoyed the friendship of his fellow members up until the onset of his brief illness. Manning was a member of Old Fort Baptist Church where he was baptized in 2004.
Manning enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, playing the piano, singing and weekly dinners with his grandson, John.
The family would like to thank the staff of Lowcountry Community Center Hospice Care in Summerville, SC. They were so caring and supportive to our father and our family during a difficult time.
