James "Red" Tanner

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Allen Tanner, fondly known as “Red”, age 88, of Ladson, South Carolina, who went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Born in Johnsonville, South Carolina, on December 31, 1936, James was a man of great character, deeply loved by his family, friends, and community.

James attended Johnsonville High School, later went on to obtain his GED, and honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He was also a valued member of the Free Masons. Throughout his life, James was known for his hardworking, fun-loving nature, and his mischievous sense of humor. He found great joy in playing the guitar and singing with his band of close friends, and he was a skilled carpenter. His hobbies were a reflection of his creative spirit and love for life.

Above all, James will be remembered for his kind heart, his infectious laughter, and the immense love he had for his family. He took great pride in being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. James was always there with a listening ear, a smile, and an open heart for those he loved.

James is survived by his children, James Michael Tanner, Tina Bell, and Tammy Driggers; his grandchildren, Mellisa Auers (Tom), Joshua Tanner, Matthew Bell (Heather), Zachary Bell, Tyler Driggers (Kaitlyn), and Alyssa Driggers; as well as his great-grandchildren, Anabelle and Madelyn Auers, Kaia, Noah, Katalina, and Joshua John Tanner. His memory will forever live on in their hearts.

James is preceded in death by two wives, Marie Tanner and Margie Tanner.

A graveside service with Navy Honors will be held on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave, North Charleston, SC 29406.

James’s family expresses their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time of loss. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
