Born on March 5, 1926, in Greenwood, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Fred H. Alewine, Sr. and Clara B. Alewine.
Rev. Alewine was a graduate of Wofford College and the Candler School of Theology. He became a deacon in the Methodist Church in 1952. His first church appointment was in 1950, while still a student, and he retired in 1992. Throughout his ministry, he served numerous United Methodist churches in South Carolina, as well as holding various administration positions in the South Carolina United Methodist Conference. He served on several boards and trusteeships within the SC UMC Conference and was a delegate to the Jurisdictional and World Methodist Conferences.
In retirement, he continued to serve as an associate pastor and retired supply pastor to several United Methodist churches in the Charleston district. In 2017, he was named Pastor Emeritus of Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville, SC. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Rev. Alewine was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Betty W. Alewine, as well as his siblings, Fred H. Alewine, Jr., Mary Claire Driggers, and Betty A. Satterfield.
He is survived by his daughter, Donne Alewine White; his sons, J. Michael Alewine, and Glenn Alewine, M.D.; his grandchildren, William J. White, Joye E. White, and Matthew G. White; his brother-in-law, Al Wilson (Brenda); and many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Rev. Alewine will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 2PM in the Sanctuary of Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 West Third South Street, Summerville, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 1PM in Spell Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests the donations be made to the South Carolina United Methodist Foundation, Inc. (P.O. Box 5087, Columbia, SC 29250-5087) for the James E. and Betty W. Alewine Scholarship Fund.
