Horace Randolph Hair of Charleston passed away Thursday, February 26, at a local nursing facility. Horace was born June 9, 1929, in Columbia, SC. Horace’s parents, Reuben Randolph and Vera Coward Hair, returned to live in the Hampton Park area of Charleston after he was born. Growing up at Hampton Park afforded Horace many opportunities that would shape his life forever. One of his first jobs was delivering daily newspapers on his bike, and he went to work at South Carolina Electric and Gas Company delivering mail by bike. His career with SCE&G would go on for another 41 years. Horace graduated from Charleston High in 1946. He grew up in Hampton Park Baptist Church, and it was during a young singles outing at the Baptist Beach House on Folly Beach that he met the love of his life, Faye Baker. Horace and Faye celebrated 60 years of marriage on May 30, 2014. Horace and Faye joined Ashley River Baptist Church as a young married couple, and their church became the foundation on which they would build their family. After he retired from SCE&G, Horace worked at his wife’s business, The Three Petals Flower and Gift Shoppe. Horace loved people and he gave himself completely in service as a Boy Scout, Church Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Masonic Past Master, Kiwanis member and most recently, as a resident of Heartland of West Ashley. Horace was always full of life, never met a stranger and loved children. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a laugh to match. Horace was legally blind from birth and had survived polio at a young age, but he never let anything hold him back. He rode his bike to the community pool to swim laps, volunteered to help children read at the local elementary school and always stayed involved in his community and church. His positive attitude and love of life and Christ were an inspiration to many. Horace leaves behind two children: E. Randy Hair (Laureen) of Hendersonville, NC, and Deborah H. West (Herbie) of Ravenel, SC; four grandchildren, Justin West, Blake West, Matthew Hair and Bethany Hair and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Wren West.
