Shirley lived a wonderful life surrounded by family and loyal friends, who are considered family to this day. She was a loving wife, precious mother, and best friend. An only child born to Lorena and Hoke Etheredge in Pauls Valley, grew up in Oklahoma City. She studied Interior Design at Oklahoma A&M College (OSU) where Shirley met and married Lt. Herbert G. Davis for love, not money. They lived in Heidelberg, Germany for two years where Herb was stationed in the Army. They managed to tour Western Europe on a shoestring and a few passes from Uncle Sam. They returned to civilian life to live in Liberal, Kansas where there was “nary a tree to spoil the view and the wind and snow blew and blew”!
Shirley pampered her daughters, Linda, and Teresa throughout their lives. She was keen on proper manners and managed to teach them to keep their toes pointed forward with shoulders back and keep their elbows off the table. She was always involved with their activities from Girl Scouts to piano and riding their horse Trixie. She and her daughters became best friends, having too much fun playing and working side by side through life.
She and Herb cruised and traveled the U.S. and the world but always made family a priority. They returned to Europe many times to re-visit their beloved Heidelberg. For years she enjoyed their vacation home on Lake Tenkiller, hand churning home-made ice-cream & picking fresh berries for cobblers. She loved tennis, boating, water, and snow skiing, while always sharing their good fortune with their many lifelong friends and families. She cherished time at their Colorado mountain property where they overlooked the South Platte River and walked across the road to fish for rainbow trout to fry up for dinner.
Shirley and Herb owned an independent oil and gas company which was full of long hours splicing electric logs and that rewarding work enabled them to thoroughly enjoy retirement.
Shirley was the perfect hostess and gracious entertainer and hosted many parties and celebrations for friends and organizations at their home in Edmond for 30 years. Shirley learned to cook at an early age, a skill she thankfully passed to her children and Grandchildren. Etiquette was important; however, she knew how to have fun & would slurp spaghetti & deal bread like cards around the table to entertain the grandchildren! She also passed on her love of table games, cards & puzzles that the family still enjoys together.
Shirley celebrated the opportunity to be a meaningful part of her Grandchildren’s lives enjoying vacations together, activities and traveling. Being able to hold Evelyn (6), Davis (4) & Mira (3), her Great Grandchildren, in her loving arms was a highlight in her life that brought many hugs, smiles and laughter. When blessed with Raegan (16) and Boston (9) as they entered her life with whirls and twirls, she was thrilled and delightfully entertained. Shirley always said, “the more GIRLS the merrier”! When the Great Grandchildren visited as they did often, there was always a special brightness in Shirley’s eyes and on her face. You could see her come alive in those precious moments.
Shirley was active in the Oklahoma City Geological Wive’s Association, Oklahoma City Orchestra League and supports scholarships for Oklahoma State University & The Oklahoma Geological Foundation.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved Herb of 65 years and her cherished parents Hoke and Lorena. She is survived by daughters Linda (& Jan) Dorfman, Teresa (& Don) Pope, Grandchildren Karen Dorfman, Jason (& wife) Claire Dorfman, George Cobb (& wife) Courtney, Joe Davis Cobb (& wife) Hannah, & Great Grandchildren Evelyn and Mira Dorfman, Raegan, Boston and last, but not least Davis Baker Cobb.
