She grew up in Pennsylvania bringing all the traditions of ' Dutch Country' with her when she and her husband Leonard and their two daughters Sandra Ryden and Pamela Hare moved to Oklahoma. Sara delighted in celebrations including the marriages of her daughters and with the additions of 'sons' in law John Ryden and Terry Hare, her family grew in her love. With the birth of her only grandson Michael Hare joyous celebrations took new meaning especially for her favorite holiday Christmas. In the tradition of eastern melting pots, Sara began preparing for Christmas in early summer, noting gifts to please, and baking began the day after Thanksgiving. This small family always grew at the holidays with inclusions of family friends of all ages and walks of life. Anyone without a place to go 'welcomed'. More family celebration occurred when Michael and his love and life partner Kristi Sanders were married.
Sara enjoyed 'making memories', sharing fun filled experiences with friends and family including her sister Ruth and her husband Roy who preceded her in death. Their son Allen
his wife Faye, and their offspring Beth and Diane widened the circle as they married and had children.
Life shifted with the loss of her life long companion, Leonard. Sara moved to Sand Springs to care for her grandson. A seasoned mother and caretaker, she had taken care of infants in her home for ten years, each child becoming part of and benefiting from her generous heart.
Sara was a fabulous cook and baker, creating the “ 'Sniff with Sara', Food Preparation Call Center”. LOL. She worked hard all her life beginning at a young age on family farms, worked at the Harrisburg Hospital, food preparation for 15 years and Norman Regional Hospital as a Dietary Assistant retiring after 27 years. She received her Dietary Assistant degree from OSU. While working at the NRH she prepared special diets and NRH pies that Norman still remembers.
During her retirement, she remained very busy. She was among the first volunteers at All Saints Catholic School working with kindergarten and first graders. She and Leonard participated in Christmas as 'Santa's Helpers' providing 'Santa' gifts to children. She and Leonard were active in both preparing and delivering for Meals on Wheels. Sara received Norman's “Volunteer of the Year Award” in 1998.
She was an OU fan since 1966. Game day at the Wagner house meant preparing food for guests. In later years confirming game times with family was weeks ahead.
Faith so important to her she was a long time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, active in service groups including St. Teresa’s Guild. She was later a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sand Springs.
She was a quilter, making one for each member of the family and close friends. She crocheted many blankets, scarves and hats for the homeless of Norman, Sand Springs and OKC. Hats were crocheted for infants born in Tulsa area hospitals.
Funeral Mass will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 N. Porter Avenue, Norman,OK on Tuesday, July 7, at 130 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her memory (Sara Kathryn Wagner) to Food for Friends: info@foodandshelterinc.org.
