Joe Prymus Lewis, Jr., was born December 10, 1948, to Joe and Inez Lewis in New Orleans, Louisiana. He joined Beulah Baptist church, New Orleans at the age of nine years old, and became a junior deacon as a young man. He graduated L. B. Landry High School and attended Rex Electronics School, and joined the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a photographer.
On October 18, 1969, he married Dorethea “Diane” Fountain. To this union were four children born. They both graduated from Kay’s Academy of Beauty and Barbering School.
In 1987 the family moved to Norman, Oklahoma and he was ordained as a Deacon at Community Missionary Baptist Church. He also was advisor to the Usher Board, Sunday school teacher and member of the Brotherhood. Joe and Diane were owners of the first black business in Norman, J. D. Ebony Beauty Supply. Also he was employed at Oklahoma Youth Center, Tinker AFB Commissary and Norman A-1 Taxi Company.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Inez Lewis, his devoted wife, D. “Diane” Lewis and a daughter, Tyra Lewis.
Cherishing his memory will be his four children: one son, Joe P. Lewis III (Natasha) of Houston, Texas; three daughters, Denise Hulbert (Charlie) of New Orleans, Louisiana, Misty Whitfield and Katherine Lewis both of Norman; two sisters, Janice Jupiter (Vincent)of Norman, Joan Orin of New Orleans, Louisiana; 14 grandchildren, Joshua, Charlena, Charlie, Jr., Jason, Unique, Ja’Rod, Jar’Rel, Naomi, Alan, Gordon, Genesis, Jasmine, Jordan and Josiah; one brother, Raynel Lewis of Norman, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, church family and friends.
Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, March 13 at the Community Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Richard H. Gaines officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park, under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service. The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, March 12 at Primrose Funeral Service.
