He was born October 8, 1938 in Clyde, NC to James McDowell and Dorothy Jewel (McCracken) Best. He married Barbara Annette (Ferguson) Best on April 12, 1958.
Jimmy proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He retired after 20 years of service. He loved to fish, hunt, and explore the outdoors for the many years he lived in Anchorage, Alaska. He was a talented musician. Later he retired from Atlantic Richfield Corporation, where he was an Electrical Engineer at Prudhoe Bay. He was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Goldsboro, NC for over 50 years and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife: Barbara Annette Best; children: James Alan (Lydia) Best of Clyde, NC, Lisa (Ralph) Stewart of Norman, OK; grandchild: Shawn (Taressa) Best of Clyde, NC, Jake (Mallory) Stewart of Noble, OK, Emma Stewart of Norman, OK; great-grandchild: Sara Best of Clyde, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 1p.m. until the 2p.m. Memorial Service on Friday January 12, 2018 at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Clyde, NC. Burial will follow at Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Clyde, NC.
