He was born to Raymond and Birdie Sloan on August 10, 1946 and dedicated his life to Jesus at the age of 15 while on retreat at Falls Creek. After graduating from Burke Burnette high school, he attended Midwestern University where he graduated with a BA in Business and met the love of his life Jo at the Baptist Student Union. Shortly after graduation Jerry was drafted to the Vietnam War where he served his country abroad and received a military commendation. 9 months after returning from war his wife Jo gave birth to their first child Tami. Together, they had 2 children: Tami and Andrew.
Jerry loved spending time in jail and juvenile ministry, every Wednesday and Sunday he would be out sharing his faith and inspiring others to find deeper meaning and connection to God. He truly believed in the goodness of all people. Jerry was also an excellent neighbor and friend. You could find him nearly every morning enjoying a breakfast at Braum’s on Porter St. with his closest friends and neighbors. As a skilled piano player, he filled his home with mix of honky-tonk and gospel music, his favorite way to pass the time was watching old Gregory Peck westerns, and his family’s favorite get-together film trilogy, Back to the Future.
A dedicated Sooner fan, Jerry and his son Andrew, attended 31 seasons of OU football games together. One of Andrew’s best recent memories with his dad, was traveling with his brother-in-law Ryan to Manhattan, KS to watch the Sooners beat K-State 37-31. Jerry also loved his Sooner Softball team and was so proud when our 2021 team won the Women’s College World Series.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 pm on December 9, 2021 at Primrose Funeral Home, near the corner of Porter and Robinson in Norman.
