She was the eighth of nine siblings and was raised primarily in and around Noble, OK. She graduated Salutatorian from Noble High School in 1947. On May 17, 1947 she married Charles (Jack) Brown, a local WWII veteran, in Noble.

Helen enjoyed singing in the Barbershop Belles, a local Norman choral group and writing poetry. After her retirement, Helen and Jack enjoyed traveling to see their children and grandchildren and sites around Oklahoma. They were both active members in their church, Berry Road Baptist Church, and helped to build an addition to the church. Helen enjoyed living on her acreage in east Norman where she could watch the birds and animals, until going to live with her daughter in San Antonio.
