Carl Bertrand Morrell, 100, affectionately known to his family and childhood friends as “Shorty,” passed away Tuesday October 20,2015 in Norman. He was born to Joseph and Maude (Clary) Morrell, September 10, 1915, in rural Lexington, and graduated from Lexington High School in 1935.
Carl served stateside in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1946. After resigning his commission as a Captain in the Signal Corps, he resumed his college education at the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1948.
Upon completion of his formal education, Carl accepted an accounting position with the Continental Oil Company and relocated his young family to Ponca City. He worked for CONOCO as an Accountant and accounting supervisor for thirty-three years, retiring at age sixty-five. Following the death of his wife Delma (Higbee) in 1985, he returned to Norman.
Carl was also preceded in death by his parents, second wife Agnes (Waddle), brother Jesse, and sisters Gladys, Norma, and Francis Oletha. Carl is survived by sisters Dorothy June and Carolyn Sue, children Carl Edward (Susan) Morrell and Donna (Alan) Fleck, step-children Jack (Judy) Morrell and Karen (Tony) Claxton, grandchildren Jacob (Elaine) Morrell, Jeffrey (Angie) Morrell, Koby (Jamie) Fleck, Kami (Nick) Swingle, Sara Cowan, Mary Beth (Craig) Cadwallader, Trinia (Mark) Pearson; great-grandchildren: Maile, Ethan, John, Alex, Megan, Lauren, Preston and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and celebration of Carl’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday October 31, 2015 at the Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 N. Porter, Norman. As the Morrell family patriarch for 33 of his 100 years, he was dearly loved and will be missed.
