Brett Alan Hughbanks was born July 12, 1961, to James and Donna Hughbanks at Donaldson AFB, Greenville, South Carolina. The second of four children, Brett grew up in an Air Force family and had the opportunity to live in many states, including New Jersey, Texas, Florida, Virginia, and overseas in Germany.
As a child, Brett was well-liked by his classmates and impressed others with his kindness. He was quick to laugh and quite a thrill-seeker on the skateboard.
He graduated from Ferguson High School, Newport News, Virginia, in 1979, having completed vocational training in carpentry. He spent his working life as a carpenter working in construction and home remodeling. Though he worked in many areas of the trade, Brett took great pride in his craft of woodworking and cabinetry. His hard work continually earned high praise from customers, and Brett certainly left his mark in Norman. In fact, the woodwork at Primrose Funeral Home shows Brett’s skilled hand.
Brett married Beverly Williams in 1981 and had two children, Nicole and John Hughbanks. They divorced in 1983.
He later married Tamora Phillips and raised one son, Jeffrey James Hughbanks, born April 11, 1986, and step-daughter, Laura Phillips. Brett and Tamora have lived in Norman, Oklahoma, for over 30 years.
Brett passed away peacefully February 22, 2018, at his home after a brief battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife Tamora, son Jeff, step-daughter Laura and her children, Alex Wise, and her son Dmitri; Brett Dudden, U.S. Army; Taylor Dudden; Hayden West. Also, Brett’s parents, James and Donna Hughbanks of Denton, Texas, brothers Randy Hughbanks and his wife Sue Ann of Signal Mountain, Tennesee, Dan Hughbanks and his wife Blanca of McAllen, Texas, sister Sarah Sims and her husband Mike of Terrell, Texas; many nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family.
He will be greatly missed.
The family of Brett Hughbanks thanks each one of you for your love, support, and continued prayers. In lieu of flowers, donations to cover funeral expenses can be made to James R. Hughbanks, or memorial gifts in Brett’s name may be made to the charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 N. Porter Ave., Norman, OK, at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 3, 2018.
