William Gilmore Jackson, Sr, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Wednesday, December 6, 2017. He was born in Sanford, NC to the late Carlton and Katie Jackson. After attending school, WG worked for Norfolk & Western Railroad and then was drafted into the Army. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded in the Korean Conflict. After being discharged, he continued working for the railroad for 40 years.
WG loved traveling, restoring old cars & boats, fishing, boating, NASCAR, and a good game of poker with family and friends. He and his wife traveled to every state except Hawaii in their motor home.
WG was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley; siblings, Eddy Lynn, Geneva, and Carlton “June”.
Left to cherish his memory are children, William Jackson, Jr. (Becky), Steven (Sandra), and Allison Whitney (Craig); sister, Betty; grandchildren, Stephanie, Danielle, Ryan, Shaun, Brent, Joshua, Jessie, and Christopher; great grandchildren, Cameron, Ella, Ethan, Matthew, Lucas, Gabe, Zeph, Emery, Lexi, JJ, and one on the way! He will also be missed by his loving shi-tzu companion, Cody. WG will be missed tremendously.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2017, 5-7PM. A service will be held on Monday, December 11, 2017, 12PM. Both will take place at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be left for the family at www.woodlawngroup.com.
