William Preston Hogge, Sr., 88 went to be with the Lord on September 14, with his loving family by his side. He was pre-deceased by his wife Edna Elizabeth, his daughter Margie Freuh and his parents Mary M. West and George Washington Hogge.
He is survived by his 3 sons William Preston Hogge Jr. and his wife Sandra, Robert C. Hogge and his wife Donna, Tracy and his wife Danna and 1 daughter Teresa R. Davis and her husband Joey. He is honored in memory by his 14 grandchildren: Susan, Ellen, Bubba, Elizabeth, Bobby, Sara, Tara, Stephanie, Joey, John Jamie, Matt, Tracy, and Kasey. He has 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-granddaughter, all which will miss him dearly.
Mr. Hogge was a decorated WWII veteran in the 79th Division. He was active in many military campaigns during the war. He landed on Utah Beach with the 313th Infantry Regiment. From there he was involved in the battle of Cherbourg, La-Haye-du-Puits, the Seine Bridgehead and then on to Belgium, Moselle and into the battle of Foret De Parroy and in the crossing of the Reine River. He marched on to Germany and Czechoslovakia.
He received the 2 Bronze Stars, Croix de Guerre, Combat Infantry Badge and his Parachute Badge.
The family will receive friends at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel on Wednesday, September 17 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. at the same location. The internment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Following the service the family will receive visitors at the Chesapeake Athletic Club located at 3544 Argonne Drive in Norfolk.
