Wayne was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 5th, 1934. He retired from the City of Norfolk Housing Authority after 20 years of service. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and retired after 20 years of dedicated service. He worked as a Damage Control Technician, achieving the rank of Petty Officer First Class. He was a veteran of the Vietnam and Korean Wars. He was the recipient of two National Defense Service Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Korean Service Medal. He also received a combat action ribbon as well as an accommodation letter from former President Richard Nixon.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents Henry Tolton King and Jeanette Suclte, two brothers Bob King, Carl King and a sister Mattie Jane King.
Wayne is survived by his children John Fairfax (Regina), Tommy Barnes, Marty Barnes (Donna), Howard King (Jolene), Mattie Jane Chambers (Watson), Kimberly Hoover (Harold) and Larry King (Claudia), his siblings Earl King, Kenneth King, Jana Cooper and Millie Vaillancourt, 16 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Wayne enjoyed spending a lot of his time in Cumberland County at ‘The Cabin’ where everyone was welcome. He enjoyed many, many things. Among those things were his dog Lucy, hunting, fishing, shooting guns, cold beer, camping, NASCAR, country western music and above all his friends and family. On any given weekend he was surrounded by friends in the backyard having oyster roasts and playing horse shoes. For many years he coached baseball on Little Creek Amphibious Base, even taking an All Star team across the state.
Graveside service with military honors will be held 10am, Saturday, March 2 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens (6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. Norfolk, VA 23502) with his Grandson, Pastor Jason Fairfax officiating.
