NORFOLK Walter Berry Stowe, 92, passed away at his Norfolk home on July 28. He was born in Hatteras, NC on June 16, 1919 and was the youngest and last surviving child of John Irving and Jeanette Stowe. After growing up in Hatteras, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1937. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and drove a landing craft during the Guadalcanal invasion. He was on the attack cargo ship USS Alhena, which was torpedoed and nearly sank in September 1942. Mr. Stowe retired from the Coast Guard in 1957. He worked for Curtis Bay Towing and retired from that job in 1976. He was married to Lucretia Evelyn Midgett in June 1947. They remained married until her death in July 1974. He is survived by a son, Walter B. Stowe, Jr. (Marilynn) of Las Vegas, NV, a daughter, Deanna Lynne Stowe of Norfolk and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member of Ferrebee-Halstead Methodist Church and a Mason and Shriner. There will be a visitation on Monday, August 1, at 6-8pm and funeral service on Tuesday, August 2, at 11 am at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel.
