Paul Wesley Smith, 70, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with multiple illnesses. He retired in 2002 after 32 years of service as a diesel mechanic with Hampton Roads Transit. Paul is survived by his wife of 51 years, Geraldine (Geri) Sutphin Smith, whom he lovingly referred to as his wife, best friend and buddy. They enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing together throughout their 51 years of marriage. He is also survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Drema and Rudy Brown of Currituck, NC, one grandson, Brian Scott Brown of Salisbury, NC, one great grandson, Nicholas Paul Brown-Evans, a very dear sister-in-law, Joann Sutphin of Norfolk, three sisters, Donna Bradford (Randall), Janet Widner (Bill), and Debbie Millirons (Howard), one brother, Bob Smith (Janet Sue), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Macel Smith, and a brother, Edward Smith (Ruby). The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the loving care provided to Paul by the physicians, nurses and staff at Sentara Leigh and Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospitals in Norfolk over the past five months.
The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:30 PM Tuesday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 818 Norview Avenue in Norfolk. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
