Mary "May" Smith Garris passed away peacefully in her home, next to her son, Jeffrey holding her hand as she went into the arms of Jesus. She was predeceased by her husband, Rex Glen Garris, and her daughter, Elizabeth Anne Moore.
Born in Dumbarton, Scotland, May immigrated to the U.S.A. as a young woman where she settled in Connecticut with her parents, James and Margaret Smith, and her two brothers, James (Jim) and John (Jack) and three sisters, Betty, Isabella (Isa) and Margaret.
May lived in Virginia Beach for over 50 years, and worked with her husband in a family fabrication manufacturing business. She loved to socialize, and kept an active social life with her bowling friends. She was a beloved friend to many. She enjoyed going out for breakfast every Wednesday with her bowling buddies (Ruth, Bernice, Irene, Donna, Phillis and Marilyn) She regularly went out for lunch with her close friend, Jean Moore.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey (Paula) Garris, and three grandchildren: Crystal Anne Joyce (Matt), Eric Alan Moore (Lindsay), Graham Glen Garris(Ana Pau), and one great grandchild, Parker Alan Moore. May was also predeceased by her sisters Betty Gillies, Isa McEwan, and brothers, James (Jim) and John (Jack) Smith.
Much appreciation to Sentara Hospice Services, and to her granddaughter, Crystal Joyce, for their loving care during May’s last days here on earth. The family would also like to give special thanks to Lynn Haynes, May's care aide, for her loving, compassionate care.
