Joanne L. Johnson is free. No more suffering and no more pain. She is resting now with her heavenly father. She died on November 13, 2012 after battling lung cancer at Chesapeake General Hospital with her loving family by her side. Joanne was born in Norfolk, Virginia; her education began at Maury High School where she was proud to be a commodore. She attended Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, and graduated from Averett University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. In 1977 Joanne accepted a position at Old Dominion University as a housekeeper and was later promoted to Administrative Assistant. She remained at the University for thirty-five years. She was a hard worker who captured the heart of everybody she came in contact with. She also worked part time at Wal-Mart for over five years. Her outgoing personality endeared her to both her co-workers and customers alike. Once again, Joanne demonstrated her amazing effect on all those around her. Joanne gave her all not only at work but to her family and her faith. There is nothing she wouldn't do for anyone in need. She was an active member of St. Mark RZUA Church where she proudly served on the Senior Female Usher Board. She was the president of the Senior Female Usher Board and Ushers Council. Joanne came from a large family where she was the eighth of sixteen children from the union of the late Charlie Randolph Church and Luvenia Church. She married Lindsey Michael Johnson and out of that union they had two children, Marquis D. Johnson and Sagay L. Johnson Galindo spouse Angelo Galindo, step daughter JaMera Tyree and daughter-in-law DeAnna L. Johnson. She is survived by her brothers and sisters Charlie Church spouse Debbie Church of Brooklyn, New York; Purnell Church spouse Sharon Church, Rita Church, Ronnie Church, Velvet Church, Billy Church, Tony Church, Marvin Church, and Tyrone Church all of Norfolk, Virginia; Tracey Crosby spouse William "Jake" Crosby of Chesapeake, Virginia; Rickey Church of Virginia Beach, Virginia; David Church spouse Ernestine Church of Austin, Texas; Shelia Berry of Baltimore, Maryland. She was predeceased by her father Charlie Randolph Church, and her brothers Tommy R. Church, and Christopher L. Church. She has 5 grandchildren: Shawn Johnson, Brianna Johnson, Adrian Johnson, Milan Galindo and Madex Galindo. Along with several nephews, nieces, cousins, and numerous friends.
Visitation will be 11/19/12 from 6-8 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home 6329 East Virginia Beach Bvld. Norfolk, VA 23502. Funeral services will be held 11/20/12, 11:00am, at St. Mark RZUA 1513 Colonial Ave. Norfolk, VA 23504. She will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
