Janet L. Shanks passed away on November 25, 2022. She was born in Southport, Maine on November 15, 1952, and spent most of her life in Virginia Beach, VA. Janet prided herself on graduating high school early to attend Cosmetology school. Janet was employed with Rudy & Kelly Hairstylists at the age of 18 and spent her entire working career with Rudy & Kelly. Janet loved her profession and was exceptionally good at it. After all, she had the gift of gab (which earned her the nick name Myrna) and could razor cut out of this world. Janet served as a mentor, a color specialist and one of the top stylists for Rudy & Kelly. In addition to her dedication to her career and clients, she was a single mom that worked two jobs to make sure the bills were paid and there was food on the table. She was always very proud of her accomplishments because she had to work so hard for them. Later in her life, she found recovery and sponsored many young women to help them also enjoy a sober way of life. Janet’s door was always open to anyone in need. Her home was often filled with those in need of fellowship and a place to be. It’s no secret she loved good conversation, and if she didn’t roast you at least one time, that meant she didn’t like you.
Janet is survived by her daughter Dana Barker, son in law Shannon Barker, Granddaughter Amaya Barker, her sister Beverly Amponin as well as her chosen family, Billy, and Tyler Burrow.
A visitation will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022 at 12pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens. Graveside service to follow.
