He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary S. Williams; and his grandson, Dustin T. Johnson.
James was a proud Vietnam Veteran who dedicated his life to serving his country. He spent 20 years, one month, and 15 days on active duty in the United States Navy, retiring as a First Class Engineman. His exemplary service earned him a Good Conduct Medal and numerous other honors.
Following his military career, he continued his service in a civilian capacity for an additional 36 years and seven months, working briefly at Portsmouth Naval Hospital (1988-1989) before serving at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, until his retirement on May 3, 2010. In total, James honorably served and protected his country for an impressive 56 years and eight months.
Recognizing the magnitude of his many accomplishments, James proudly displayed his awards, memorabilia, and travel collectibles in his home for all to admire. Above all, he was a devoted husband, steadfast in his vows throughout 64 years of marriage to his adored wife, Mary. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed.
James is survived by his loving son, James E. Williams Jr. (fiancée Christina West) of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, James Henry Gleason of St. Louis, Illinois, Angel Rae Johnson of Virginia Beach, and Marley Hayden Cartin of Suffolk, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Amiyah Larae Highter and Kali RaeLynn Highter of Virginia Beach (children of Angel), and Makena Gleason of St. Louis (child of James); two sisters, Christina Johnson and Avis Hill, both of Detroit, Michigan; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family.
James's legacy of service, dedication, and love will live on in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
