George W. Schmidt, 85, of Virginia Beach, went to be with his Lord on Monday March 31 2025. He was born in Stuttgart, Arkansas to the late George W. and Pauline Green Schmidt. He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Evelyn Ruff Schmidt, and his daughter Karen's partner, Linda Defrates.
When he was 11 years old, his family moved to Houston, Texas, where he attended and graduated fron Lutheran High School in 1957, then enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1980, and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW03). He was a Vietnam veteran.
George was a longtime member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where he served as an Elder, and sang in the choir. He also served as a Port Chaplain for the Seaman's Friend Society International Seamen's House).
George is survived by his lady friend and love, Carolyn Hink; son, David (Miles Cherkasky); daughter, Karen; daughter, Donna Miller (Rob); son, Michael ( Chauna); daughter in law, Elizabeth Schmidt; seven grandchildren, Abby Meads (David), Kevin Schmidt (Mercedes), Stephen Schmidt (Dani), Grace Schmidt, Thandiwe Schmidt, Dyllan Miller (Victoria), Cameryn Schmidt, and Corbin Schmidt; seven great grandchildren, Evelyn Jean Miller, Eden Meads, Ezra Meads, Sophia Schmidt, Avery Schmidt, John Jacob Schmidt, Holly Schmidt; and several "grand dogs".
He was very active in volunteer work and hobbies. He was a member of American Legion Post 110, where served as Post Chaplain. Lutheran Laymen's League, Association of Naval Aviation, American Radio Relay League (Life Member) call sign "WA4GDB", Quarter Century Wireless Association, Virginia Beach Amature Radio Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Military Officer Association, National Model Railroading Association.
The family is inviting friends to pay respects Friday, April, 4th 2025 from 5-7 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, located at 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. Norfolk, Va. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 5th at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 424 King's Grant Rd, Virginia Beach, Va.
Memorial contributions can be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Laymen's League, or the Norfolk Seamen's Friend Society.
