Norfolk - After 92 years, Ervon G. Donahoo (Don) passed quietly to be with our Lord at 6:50 am on April 9, 2011. A long-time Norfolk resident. Don was born September 12, 1918 in Red Oak, Iowa the son of James Arthur (son of an Irish immigrate and Osage Indian) and Myrtle Harper Donahoo (Cherokee Indian). Don embarked on his final voyage with his family surrounding him with the love, music, and tales of his rich and fruitful life.
Don was married to Felicia Grace Tomasino of Boston, Mass for 69 years. Together they shared a great adventure—raising their four sons into manhood before enjoying each other’s company while always remaining the foundational rock for their boys and their families. In their twilight years, they continued to share their rich experiences while sharing their love with their Boston Terriers,Yoda and Paco.
Don is survived by his wife Felicia and their four sons and their families. William (Vicki); John ( Pamela); Stephen (Carolyn); and David ( Buffy ), 8 grandchildren Sean, Dawn, John Jr., Jessica, Stephen, Susan, Brandon and Jason and also 4 great-grandchildren, James, Tanner, Joshua, and Jane. He also is leaving behind his youngest brother Marvin (JoAnn).
Don was a member of our “greatest generation.” He proudly served his country for nearly 27 years in the U.S. Navy attaining the rank of Chief Engineman. His service included four years during WWII in the Pacific Theater where he fought in many major battles to include: Tarawa, the Philippine Liberation and Iwo Jima.
Upon retirement from the Navy, Don moved on to his second career with the Civil Service—continuing his service to our nation for another 26 years. After his second retirement, Don opened his own business and served our city for another 10 years before retiring the third time.
Of all his accomplishments over the years, Don always considered his greatest achievement in life to be his “Family.” His family says “farewell beloved Husband, Father, Pop, Dad, Grandpa, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather.” You will be missed by us all.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 12th, from 6 to 8 pm, at Smith and Williams Funeral Home on Norview Avenue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Pius X Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 13th, at 11:00 am. Interment to follow the Mass at Woodlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made in Don’s name to St Pius X Catholic Church.
