She was born April 12, 1931, in Bessemer, Alabama, and finished nursing school in Columbus, Georgia. She became a registered nurse, a profession she excelled in for many decades before retiring in 1995 from the Norfolk Department of Public Health in Norfolk, Virginia. Later in life, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Hampton University.
She was married to Dr. Otto C. Sampson, Jr., her loving husband of 60 years and professor emeritus, Norfolk State University, who passed away in 2016. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Michael Sampson, Sr. (Catherine Allen), Ronnie Sampson (Nancy Martin), and Mark Sampson; two daughters, Mitzi Sampson, M.D., and Rita Sampson, Esq.; and three grandchildren, Chrystine Walsh (Braden Walsh), Michael Sampson, Jr., and Sydney Mott; and one great-grandchild, Harrison Walsh. She also has several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was a mother-figure to many other people. She is survived by her only remaining sibling, Lawrence McAdory of Bessemer, Alabama.
A lifelong Christian, Edith was a long-time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. She lived a long, loving, faithful, and exemplary life. Although we will miss her physical presence, her spirit and memory will remain with us forever.
The funeral service will take place at noon (12 p.m.) on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at New Horizons Presbyterian Church (formerly Covenant Presbyterian Church), 913 Covenant Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23504, followed by interment at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6329 E Virginia Beach Boulevard, Norfolk, VA. 23502.
