Bertha Mae Welch Outlaw, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went to be with the Lord on November 23, 2022. She was born in Edenton, North Carolina to the late Roland Welch and Lillie Wilson Welch on November 29, 1929. She is predeceased by her husband of 55 years, James Louis Outlaw; daughter, Jessie Mae Hawkins; son, Jerome Kern Outlaw; and four siblings.
Bertha Mae retired from Leigh Memorial Hospital as an Anesthesia Aide after nearly 40 years in the healthcare industry. Bertha Mae enjoyed crocheting, cooking, gardening, and sewing. She was especially known for the homemade fruit cakes she sold and shared with family, neighbors, and co-workers. She was a member of Abyssinia Baptist Church where she participated in the Silver Saints Senior Program.
Bertha leaves to her memory, two sons, Dannie Outlaw, and James Outlaw, both of Norfolk, Virginia; two daughters, Gail Lee and husband Rudolph of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Grace Outlaw of Norfolk, Virginia; one sister, Elizabeth Smith of Lyons, New York; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends.
A visitation for Bertha will be held Friday, December 2, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, Virginia 23502. A Celebration of Life will occur Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Funeral Home.
